“Gossip Girl,” along with its Wednesday night lead-in “America’s Next Top Model,” are helping cement the CW’s position as a fresh and female-friendly channel. So it comes as no surprise that “Gossip Girl” has become the first fall series picked up for a full season of episodes.

“People everywhere are talking about `Gossip Girl’ and we believe this show will continue to build audience as it builds buzz,” Dawn Ostroff, the president of entertainment for the CW, said in the announcement today.

Compared with the big four broadcast networks, the CW’s ratings are undersized, but among viewers in the niche demographic of 18- to 34-year-olds the channel is achieving its definition of success. After three episodes, the show is averaging three million viewers and a 7 percent share among women aged 18 to 34. The CW reports a 20 percent ratings gain in the demographic after DVR playback is factored in.

Up against “Private Practice” on ABC, “Gossip Girl” is the second highest rated show of the night among teens.
